Weight Loss Supplement Injury Attorneys in Arkansas

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approves various drugs annually. But while all FDA-approved drugs are intended to help with various issues, sometimes they end up doing harm. Unfortunately, this often goes undiscovered until many people have been injured or killed.

Weight-loss supplements have been around for decades. While they are intended to help people lose weight, one such drug, Belviq® (generic name lorcaserin), has been found to cause harm.

Caddell Reynolds Law Firm is committed to holding manufacturers and marketers of harmful drugs accountable for the injury they cause. We have represented thousands of patients in dangerous drug litigation and have recovered hundreds of millions of dollars in compensation for our clients.

Side Effects of Belviq®

After five years of research, the FDA has found that Belviq® and Belviq XR increase the risk of cancer in those who take the medication. In response, the FDA has pulled all Belviq® and lorcaserin products from the U.S. market.

Belviq® works by changing the chemical signals of the brain, which are responsible for appetite. This increases the consumer’s feeling of fullness, helping them eat less and lose more weight.

Unfortunately, a study of 12,000 participants showed that those taking Belviq® had a higher cancer diagnosis rate than those who took a placebo (7.7 percent compared to 7.1 percent).

Cancers associated with Belviq® include:

  • Colon cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer

Cancers potentially associated with Belviq® include:

  • Brain cancer
  • Breast cancer

Side effects and complications of Belviq® include:

  • Constipation/diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Mental difficulties
  • Nausea
  • Rashes
  • Upper respiratory infection

Dangerous Drugs: Frequently Asked Questions

The side effects I experienced are listed on the drug's warning label. Does that mean I don't have a case?

Not necessarily. The presence of a warning on a label doesn't automatically mean the manufacturer adequately disclosed the true severity or frequency of that risk. If the company knew a side effect was more dangerous or more common than the label suggested—or downplayed it to protect sales—you may still have a viable claim.

The drug I took has already been recalled. Does that help my case?

A recall can be significant evidence, but it isn't required for a claim and doesn't guarantee recovery. What matters is whether the manufacturer knew—or should have known—about the harm the drug was causing, and whether they responded responsibly. In many cases, internal documents revealed during litigation show that manufacturers were aware of serious risks long before they warned the public or pulled the drug from the market.

How long do I have to file a dangerous drug claim?

The deadline varies by state—3 years in Arkansas, 5 years in Missouri, and 2 years in Oklahoma—and the clock typically starts running from the date you were injured or discovered that the drug caused your harm. Some exceptions apply, particularly in cases where the connection between the drug and the injury wasn't immediately apparent. The earlier you consult an attorney, the better—evidence matters, and these cases take time to build.
