FreeStyle Libre 3 Malfunctions: What You Need to Know

On November 24, 2025, Abbott issued an Urgent Medical Device Correction for certain FreeStyle Libre 3 Sensor and FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus CGM devices due to the risk of incorrect low glucose readings.

When a glucose monitor detects low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia), patients may increase their insulin dosage and/or consume more carbohydrates to restore their levels to a healthy range. However, if a FreeStyle Libre 3 or FreeStyle Libre 3+ sensor malfunctions and returns an inaccurately low reading, those actions can push blood sugar sharply higher and, over time, lead to potentially life-threatening complications, such as:

Complications potentially caused by malfunctioning sensors include:

• Severe hyperglycemia: A dangerous spike in blood sugar levels
• Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA): A potentially fatal buildup of ketones in the blood

• Hospitalization
• Death

If your sensor is part of the recall, Abbott recommends stopping its use immediately.
