Good Day NWAWhen you head out to purchase presents this holiday season, it’s essential to know the risks posed by certain toys that can be dangerous for kids. Many different product defects can occur, including design, manufacturing, and marketing defects in everyday items. With that being said, it’s necessary to understand what to avoid when buying toys for children.

And, with the holidays now upon us, attorney Bill Reynolds of Caddell Reynolds visited the set of Good Day NWA to discuss dangerous toys that could potentially harm younger children and infants. A video clip of his appearance is available below.

Tips for a Safe Holiday Season

No matter how safe a company advertises their toy to be – supervision, proper use, and maintenance of toys are responsibilities for adults. Being informed and aware of risks will help you protect your child’s health and safety. Here are some general tips to follow:

Before buying children’s toys:

  • Only buy toys suitable for the child’s age group and use the recommended age labeling guide.
  • Avoid purchasing toys that have sharp edges or points.
  • Check for rigid eyes and noses on stuffed animals and ensure a child cannot rip them off.
  • Ensure all small parts of larger toys, such as wheels on toy cars, are secure and can’t break off.

After buying toys:

  • Read all safety messages on the packaging and follow instructions.
  • Teach your child how to use the toy properly.
  • Make sure that batteries in toys are correctly installed.
  • Do not let your child sleep with battery-operated toys.
  • Remove toys and mobiles from cribs and playpens when the baby begins to push themselves up.

Regularly inspect toys and throw away broken toys that can’t be fixed.
